I draw inspiration from several sources. Nature inspires me. I particularly like the Art Noveau movement and the way the pieces incorporate natural themes. Artists that inspire me are Jackson Pollock, Thomas Hart Benton, and Gustav Klimt. I love drawing portraits and am inspired by each unique face. I love experimenting with new techniques and different ways of painting something.

My creative process differs depending on the type of piece I create. With nature or fantasy pieces I tend to make several sketches and find photo reference on the internet before I draw it on the canvas. When I do portraits, I’m looking for interesting facial expressions or wrinkles. I’m looking for a challenge. With abstract pieces I generally practice the style I’m doing on paper with mixed media before I paint on the canvas.

The medium I use depends on the type of piece I’m doing. Quite a few pieces are pastel on paper. I use several brands of pastel pencil but my favorite is Conte brand. The papers I use are Strathmore toned tan or Canson XL dry mixed media paper. Both are good, thick papers. I like the Canson especially because it has more of a rough surface to hold onto the pastel material. For Acrylic pieces my paint brand of choice is Golden. They produce nice vibrant colors that don’t fade as much over time. The oils I use are Gamblin oils. I like Gamblin because they are non-toxic, they only use pure pigments and high grade natural oils that yellow significantly less with age.
